ABSTRACT COUPS D’ETAT AND THEIR EFFECTS ON TURKISH ECONOMY The fundamental object of this MA thesis is to analyze, on the basis of state-class relations, the effects of military coups in Turkey in the sphere of economy. The main reason for focusing on this topic lies in the need for a research on whether a relationality can be detected between military coups and the condition of the economy. Accordingly, in the text, an answer is tried to be elaborated to the question of how the direct or indirect interventions of the Turkish Armed Forces on civil governments and national administration exerted effects on economy and the nature of these effects. As the main result of the research shows, although the effects of military coups on economic indicators vary, it is clear that the coups did not bring any “benefits” as regards the majority of the population. Instead, with each coup d’état the democratization process in the country was suspended and the way paved for an increase in poverty for large masses of people. On the other hand, the capitalist class, which can be posited as the dominant class in the country, survived the coups d’état periods with certain benefits. This can be regarded as an indication of that the collaboration between the state and the capitalist class, present at times of civil governments, continues without interruption and indeed intensifies during coups d’état periods.
