Abstract:

Although "Religion" and "Music" can take part in the lives of many people at every moment, when pronounced together, they may be perceived as discint two concepts. However, it can be seen that music has been a significant means of expression of the feelings and thoughts related to religion and sometimes spreading the religious doctrines to large masses throughout the history. The fact that the two divine religions (Christianity and Judaism) included music in their shrines, since it has been understood that music is effective in memorisation of holy writ texts, has prompted us to conduct this study. The purpose of this research is to seek the answer to the question "does recitation with maqam have an effect on memorisation of the verses of the Quran the holy writ of Islamic religion?" An experimental study of four weeks, was performed experimental and control groups constituted from sixty two voluntary second grade students in Marmara University Faculty of Theology. The experimental group was asked to listen to the Quran recitation which was performed with maqam and to memorise the specified verses. Whereas the control group was asked to listen to the recitation of the same verses without any maqam and to memorise the verses. Participants' sound were tape recorded within their permissions while they were reading the memorised verses. The tape records were listened by the researcher and these were evaluated within the frame of criteria determined based on expert's reading. The codings were analyzed statistically. The findings indicate the structural harmony of the two groups and pointed that the group which memorised by listening the recitation with maqam, is more successful in memorising compared to the control group. Based on these findings; it was concluded that the recitation with maqam has a positive effect in the memorisation of verses of the Quran.
