-------------------- Death is as real and universal as life. Although humankind came up with various mechanisms toward immortality, the notion of utter non-existence has remained a matter of concern throughout every era. As cultures form, so the meaning of immortality broadens along with it. The notion of immortality does not have a common quality, and varies geographically. It symbolizes the good for some cultures, while it is regarded as the source from which the evil and pain derives in some others. Shortly after the invention of photography, it became the visual memory of society. People primarily benefited from the mission of photography to keep the memory of their loved ones alive. To be able to fully understand the role of death in photography, one needs to become familiar with different approaches to death. As humankind put forward the idea of immortality despite his very limited existence, which he is painfully aware of, the emerging approaches initially gave rise to myths and religions. This was followed by the creation of works bearing the traces of death, where our thoughts and perceptions transform into objects. The fact that photography is a direct reflection of reality, on the other hand, put it in a special place. This study examines the theoreticians who address the phenomenon of death photographically, and the artists who structurally developed a style of expression.
