ABSTRACT TELEOLOGICAL DIMENSIONS OF AVICENNA’S PHILOSOPHY Teleology is an important proponent of metaphysical thought in Islamic philosophy. The idea that there is an order and finality in the universe was discussed in the Hellenistic period and has been passed to Islamic philosophy framed in the concepts of order, purpose and providence (al-‘inâya). The teleological thought in the Islamic philosophy was discussed by Islamic philosophers from different traditions, but it came to its ideal form in the hands of Ibn Sînâ (d. 1037). Ibn Sînâ’s ideas on metaphysics, physics, ethics and politics were built on the idea of teleology. Furthermore the idea of teleology is one of the tenets of Ibn Sînâ’s philosophy in addition to the ideas of onthology and theology. The idea of teleology appears in the thought of God and the relationship between God and the universe in Ibn Sînâ’s metaphysics. Ibn Sînâ explained his metaphysical views as a whole and consistent system on the grounds of concepts like purpose, order, providence and love. According to Ibn Sînâ, there is a great order in the universe. The principle of this order is God. As a whole, the universe has existed owing to the generosity and the grace of God. Every creation in the universe tends towards God with love and desire to resemble Him and human beings realize them selves in the their ontological limitations. The teleologic dimension is dominated in Ibn Sînâ’s thought of nature. His teleological approach to nature can be seen in the frame of his explanations of the causality and the final cause of natural events. Moreover the idea of teleology can be seen Ibn Sînâ’s thoughts on ethics and politics. His explanations about ethics and order of community end up with the necessity of a low-maker prophet. As a result, this dissertation aims to investigate all dimensions of Ibn Sînâ’s idea of teleology.
