ABSTRACT Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of applying a low dose of the correct electrical current on the surface of the titanium alloy, which is the most preferred biomaterial, in the surgical area of the dentistry, on the bacterial adhesion. Material and method: In the control group, 36 titanium discs without applying a low electric current; negative low dose direct electric current was applied 36 titanium discs in the negative test group and positive was applied 36 titanium discs in the positive test group for 1 hour. In total, 108 areas were randomly selected on titanium discs and were examined under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: When scoring results of bacterial numbers were evaluated in SEM images, the mean of the control group was 2,19 ± 1,75, the mean of positive test group was 2,22 ± 1,64, and the mean of negative test group was 1,56 ± 1,44. The negative electric-charged titanium discs in the experimental group decreased in the score of bacterial adhesion, but no significant difference was observed in the statistical comparison of the score averages of Control, Negative test and Positive test groups. (p = 0.171). No statistically significant difference was found when comparing the numerical distributions of the bacterial adhesion scoring between Control, Negative test and Positive test groups.(p = 0,075) No statistically significant difference was found when the numerical distributions of bacterial adhesion scoring were compared between the Control group and the experimental groups; p = 0.068 for Control and Negative test, and p = 0.449 for Control and Positive test. However, when the numerical distributions of bacterial adhesion scoring were compared between Negative and Positive test groups, the result was found to be statistically significant. (p = 0.046) Conclusion: Negative electrical current to a reduction in bacterial adhesion was observed while the positive electric current caused to increase. We believe that keeping the electrical current at a low level (3.75μA) and restricting the application time to only 1 hour affect the statistical results.
