Abstract:
In this study, shopping mall libraries, which emerged as a new type of public libraries and started to serve in 2020, were examined. First, the definition of public libraries was made and their aims and objectives were determined. While examining shopping mall libraries, the five basic elements that make up public libraries; building, collection, library staff, budget, user-oriented, and how shopping mall libraries abroad emerged, the development processes of shopping mall libraries and their current situation are included. The relationship between shopping malls and libraries, the advantages of shopping malls with libraries, and the positive effects of having a library in a shopping mall are presented.In this research, the current situation of the shopping mall libraries that started to
serve in Turkey was analyzed through observation and literature review. It has been determined that this type of library located in a shopping mall is faster and more cost-
effective than other types of libraries because it does not require the construction of a new building and empty area. As a result of all these examinations, two model proposals, user- and reader- oriented, were presented, taking into account the expectations of current public library users in Turkey and the needs of potential users. The first one we examine is a model recommendation for exam preparation library users. In this model proposal, planning of library design and services by focusing on users is discussed. The reader-oriented shopping mall library model is designed according to the expectations and needs of readers who use the library to read books and improve their social and cultural lives.
With the model proposals in the study, it is aimed to contribute to the development of society by meeting the needs of users and readers of shopping mall libraries.
