ABSTRACT In this thesis, named ‘Institutionalisation and Spirituality in Terms of Elderness in The Modernization Process’, elderly people and their problems are put on the agenda; in terms of social, cultural and religious dimensions. The effect of changes in our society in the modernization process, to the process of elderness and ageing; the structural change in elderness and the need of institutionalisation -especially to the elderly people- in our society are taken into consideration in a sociological approach. The subject of the thesis is examined in theoretical and empirical way. The documentation method in the theoretical part and the face to face deep interview method in the empirical part are used. There have been social changes from many dimensions in our society in the modernization process and elderly people are also affected from these social changes. In addition, population ageing and average life expectancy are increasing both in the world and in our country. So there is need to study about the problems and the expectations of our elderly people. Basic concepts and classifications about elderness, and psychosocial theories of elderness are mentioned in this thesis. The processes of elderness and ageing are taken into consideration in terms of basic social institutions and spirituality. In this study, the institutions of family, religion, economics and politics are taken into consideration in detail but the other institutions are in limited. Then, in this study, the problems of the elderly people are limited especially by the fields given priority in the social institutions. In the empirical part of our study, deep interviews with the 45 elderly participants in total in the sample group -22 men and 23 women participants who are 65 years old or over and who live in Istanbul- are held over the period of 23 July 2015 through to 14 October 2015 in Istanbul. According to study findings, the main claim of this thesis is supported in general, which is ‘The elderly people are affected from the modernization process, but the social institutions are not enough to provide with the material and spiritual needs of the elderly people and to solve the elderly problems in this process so that there is need of arrangements and institutionalisation for the elderly people.’.
