Aim: Recent scientific
attempts of our department on several 5-arylidene-1,3-thiazolidin-4-one
derivatives have yielded some derivatives with antiviral and anticancer
activities and also an increasing number of studies on these type of compounds
encouraged us to pursue our efforts to synthesize 5-arylidene-1,3-thiazolidine-4-ones.
Materials
and Method: Sulfanilamide was selected as the starting
compound to synthesize 5-arylidene-1,3-thiazolidine-4-ones within context of
our thesis. Through
the reaction of sulfanilamide with chloroacetyl chloride,
2-chloro-N-[4-(sulphamoilphenil)acetamide
[1]
was gained. 1,3-Thiazolidine-4-one
ring system [2] was gained by
refluxing compound
1 and ammonium thiocyanate in ethanol. Targeted
arilidene compounds [3-14] were
synthesized by the reaction of compound 2
with appropriate aromatic aldehydes in sodium methoxyde solution.
Findings: Purity
of the synthesized compounds is confirmed by elementel analysis data. Their
structures were elucidated by the use of their IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR
spectral data.
Results: The
synthesized compounds are considered to be evaluated for their antiviral and anticancer
activity.
Keywords: 1,3-Thiazolidine-4-one, 5-arylidene-1,3-thiazolidine-4-one,
sulfanilamide, anticancer activity, antiviral activity.
