ABSTRACT In this study, the effect of collaborative teaching method in the Social Knowledge course on the success of 6 th grade students problem solving skills was investigated. The study was designed as action research and case study and involved one experimental and one control group. In the experimental and control groups, the lessons were taught by collaborative teaching method and classical teaching method, respectively. This study was conducted during the 2004-2005 academic year on 62 students in the 6 th grade of Cumhuriyet Elementary School located in Darende distcict of Malatya city of Turkey. The data was gathered by student Knowledge Form, Social Knowledge course Interest Inventory, Problem Solving Inventory , Social Knowledge Course Success Test and Social Knowledge Course Problem Solving Success Test. In the analysis Person Product Moment Corelation , Non- Parametric Kruskal Wallis-H Test, Independet Samples T- test and Paired Samples T-test were used. The frequency distribution and percentage of the sutudents involved in the study as well as the data analysis were computed by using the SPSS software. The statistical analysis results of the data are summarized as follows: 1. There was statistically significant difference between the problem solving success scores of the experimental and control groups taught by collaborative teaching method versus classical teaching method. 2. Statistically significant relationship was found between problem solving success scores and interestin the Social Knowledge course. 3. Statistically significant difference was found between problem solving success scores and problem solving attitude in the Social Knowledge course. 4. There was no statistically significant difference between problem solving success scores and gender. 5. There was no statistically significant difference between problem solving success scores and age.
